Summer Reading Reminder and Back to School Information

Posted Date: 07/19/26 (05:11 PM)

Good evening,

I hope everybody is enjoying their last weeks of summer! I wanted to share some bits of information with you as you prepare for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. If you have driven down Hughes Road lately, you have seen that crews are still working diligently on summer improvement projects!

Summer Reading

Please visit this link for information on summer reading.

Grade Level Counselors and APs

6th Grade - Kelle Moody (counselor) and Matt Sweatman (administrator)

7th Grade - Constance Long (counselor) and Josh Hollingsworth (administrator)

8th Grade - Verena Owsley (counselor) and Jasmine Simpson (administrator)

Re-Enrollment

Please complete re-enrollment as soon as possible. Schedules will be deleted on July 23rd, 2026, if a student’s re-enrollment is not completed. If you have questions about re-enrollment, please contact Mrs. Henderson at dhenderson@madisoncity.k12.al.us.

Student Schedules

Schedules will be made active in PowerSchool on the evening of July 24th, 2026. Please note that as new students continue to enroll, classes will continue to be balanced, so schedules may change between then and the first day of school. There will be an error form to fill out if you see an error on your student’s schedule. Changes will only be made if we made an error on our part. We follow the course request forms students filled out in the spring. On the first day of school, students will receive a printed copy of their schedule on teal paper in their first block.

First Day of School - August 6th, 2026

Students report to A BLOCK (not Advisory). It is the class that shows as A(A) in PowerSchool.

Students will receive a hard copy of their schedule in A block. Teachers will be in the cafeteria, gym, and the hallways in the morning to assist students to their A block.

Campus opens at 7:40 am

A Block starts at 8:15 am

School dismisses at 3:20 pm

New to Madison City Schools Orientation

If you are new to Madison City Schools, we will have a brief presentation in the cafeteria on July 27th, 2026, at 6 pm. This is an optional event in which DMS administration will share a brief overview of what to expect and answer questions. The school will not be available for tours at this time due to construction, and teachers will not be on campus.

6th Grade - Walk the Building

We are hopefully that we will be able to open the building one afternoon for a couple of hours before the start of school for 6th graders and students new to Madison City Schools to walk through the building. This is dependent on the construction timeline. We will continue to update you about this through ParentSquare notifications.

Open House

Open House is on August 11th from 5:00-7:00 pm. During Open House, you will have a chance to meet and greet with teachers and walk your student’s schedule. You can visit classes in any order you prefer. Please plan to park at the football field parking lot.

PowerSchool App

PowerSchool can be accessed using an internet browser or through an app. When setting up the app, you will need the district code - RJNS.
